OFTEC – advice on oil-fired appliances in thatched properties

If there are any concerns over oil-fired appliances in thatched properties, it is worth speaking to OFTEC - the Oil Firing Technical Association that represents the oil heating and cooking industry in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

We were recently made aware of flue positions in thatched roofs and spoke to OFTEC for further information and they quoted from British Standard 5410-1:1997, Figure 10 – Flue terminating positions for oil fired appliances, Note 9, which states:

”Notwithstanding the dimensions given above, a terminal should not be sited closer than 300 mm to combustible material. In the case of a thatched roof, double this separation distance should be provided. It is advisable to treat the thatch with a fire retardant material and close wire in the immediate vicinity of the flue.”

As well as general information about domestic oil heating, they can provide information on finding a                                                    reputable installer, technician or maintenance engineer.
